Terry Ryan was on WCCO this morning. He said the Twins will try to sign 20-25 players and keep tabs on the rest until the Aug. 15 signing deadline.

The Twins have reached agreement with 12th-round pick Michael Tarsi, a lefthander from Connecticut. Once he signs, the Twins will have inked 12 of their picks from last week's draft. Negotiations are moving very slowly with second-round pick Danny Rams, a prep catcher from Miami and fifth-round pick Nathan Striz, a prep righthander from Lakeland, Fla.

Given the money saved in the first round, you would think the Twins should sign all their top picks and have a good chance at Danieli.

Charles Nolte was signed and pitched in todays GCL game, his other names being "Charles I Don't Know" and "Charles the New Guy".

I actually had to trot all the way over to the where the team was coming off the field and ask him his name. :P

The Twins held the team's annual tryout camp at the Metrodome last week and chose one of the 110 players who auditioned. Minnesota signed 20-year-old right-handed pitcher Mark Hamburger. Hamburger is a graduate of Mounds View High School and had been attending Mesabi Community and Technical College in Virginia, Minn.

He reported to the Gulf Coast League Twins on Friday.

"He was throwing at I'd say 89 to 92 up here," Rantz said, "so we took a shot at him."

The Twins also held a tryout camp in Fort Myers, Fla., recently. The team did not sign any of the 160 players who auditioned.

Keeping in mind that this is from Charley Walters and that we only take his word when he is directly quoting someone, does he know something about Morales that we don't know?

Within days, the Twins will sign their eighth- and 10th-round draft picks from this year, leaving just Nos. 2, 4 and 5 unsigned from their top 10.

BBA has Angel Morales signed by the Twins.
8th and 10th picks are from Rice/UC Irvine (involved in CWS), and Dianna said they already had an agreement in place with Blair Erickson (10th pick). So his report seems to have some foundation.

They might have to fork some money to sign 2nd and 5th.

The lost is found. Last night I saw the Reusse story title which included the draft report, but, alas, the story didn't have the report in it. Thanks to LEN3 for reviving it. I guess there's not a whole lot here we didn't already know.

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 Patrick Reusses column for Tuesdays early editions concerned the Twins June draft. Heres a condensed version:

The Twins stuck around for all 50 rounds of this months first-year player draft. They have signed 16 of those players and scouting director Mike Radcliff said the final number doesnt figure to be more than 20.

The Twins currently have signed seven of the their top 12:

1-Ben Revere, cf; 3-Angel Morales, cf; 6-Mike McCardell, rhp; 7-Dan Berlind, rhp; 9-Steven Hirschfield, rhp; 11-Andrew Schmiesing, rf; and 12-Michael Tarsi, lhp.

Radcliff said that eighth-rounder Daniel Lehmann, a catcher from Rice, and 10th-rounder Blair Erickson, a righthanded pitcher from Cal-Irvine, also will sign soon.

Radcliff is optimistic about signing second-rounder Daniel Rams and fourth-rounder Reggie Williams. Rams is a catcher and Williams is a shortstop. They are both high schoolers.

I think we will get them both done, Radcliff said. The kid thats going to be tough is the fifth-rounder.
Nathan Stritz, a righthanded pitcher from New Mexico, has a scholarship to North Carolina. If Radcliffs current read on the situation remains correct, that would leave Stritz as the only draftee in the Twins top 12 not to sign.

Right now, theres only one player signed after 21st-rounder Ozzie Lewis, and thats a Chris Cates, the 5-3 shortstop from Louisvilles team in the College World Series. Cates was selected in the 38th round.

The Twins also went short in the first round with Ben Revere, the 5-9 outfielder from Lexington, Ky. He was rated much lower by most teams. Radcliff and the Twins have been getting hammered by draft wonks who insist it was only cheapness that caused the team to take an undersized outfielder with the 28th overall pick.

Revere signed quickly for an $800,000 bonus. The main knock against Revere is that he has a bad swing.

Well see, I guess, Radcliff said. One thing I can say is this wasnt a financial decision. We had no limit placed on us in advance.

We just really like this guy as a player. We think he can hit.

It appears the Twins signed 16th round pick, Nelvin Fuentes, a left handed pitcher out of Puerto Rico. He pitched the last inning of yesterday's game for the GCL Twins.

This is the only place I've see it and it isn't in quotes, which is my usual criteria for judging Walters, but there was an earlier story in the strib saying the signing was close, so ...

Not sure what to make of this....

PGCrosschecker shows Nate Striz as "Signed". Could be a mistake as he is said to be a very tough sign.

I sent them a email to see if they can confirm.

UPDATE: I see that PGCrosschecker now lists Striz as "unsigned".

If he does sign, it will be interesting to see how much that bonus is....

Striz committed to play ball at the University of North Carolina last fall during the early signing period.

The Phillies and the A's didn't offer him enough Thursday to walk away from school.

The Phillies called Striz at his home during the fourth round and asked if he would be willing to sign for $170,000. Striz declined.

The A's called Striz in the fifth round and offered $120,000, and again, Striz said no.

The Twins didn't call Striz before selecting him and took him with the 182nd pick overall. Will he sign?

"I don't know," Striz said. "If it's close to $300,000, I'll sign."
