This mention of Tolbert came out of a clear blue sky. Does it mean anything?

I'm skeptical. He is probably better than Punto, and definitely better than L-Rod, but you don't call up a guy hitting .393 to be a utility infielder.

I would say that Tolbert is somewhere between Luis(!) and Bartlett. I think his future is probably as a utility middle infielder who could also take over for a few days if need be. Still, no need to bring him up at this point, although his play certainly warrants it.

Dianna,
Tolbert already has 6 errors. I thought he played most of his games at second, although the Red Wings site has him listed as a SS. From observing him in person, do you think he can play big-league defense on a club that really values it? Finally, do you remember anything about his range or arm? Thanks for the time, and thanks also for your tireless work keeping us informed about the minors... I read it all (everyday)! Go Twins!

Gardy said on his radio show that Tolbert is a guy that almost works too hard at what he does. That's not a bad thing, sounds like a "gamer."
When Casilla was up with the Twins, Tolbert and Watkins alternated between SS and 2B. Now with Casilla back down, they are essentially alternating the three between the two positions. |

Im not answering for Dianna but my own observations of Tolbert.
Tolbert played mainly at 2b in Fort Myers. From watching him he had the most hustle of anyone on either the 2005 or 2006 teams. His range to me was deceptive since he was always diving and getting dirty. Sometimes on balls he could have fielded without a dive and other times on balls that were out of range but the dive looked good. Since I saw him primarily at 2nd it is hard to judge arm strength projected as a shortstop. |

Rochester infielder Matt Tolbert rebounded nicely from a strained oblique by going 5 for 5 and driving in two runs in a Red Wings' loss on Wednesday. Those five hits bumped Tolbert's batting average from .351 to .379. The next day, Tolbert went 2 for 4 and his average climbed to .383 with a .449 on-base percentage.

The Twins ... are developing another option at Class AAA Rochester, where hot-hitting infielder Matt Tolbert will move from second base to play third base.
Tolbert, a 16th-round pick in 2004, is hitting .379 for the Red Wings. Tolbert entered Tuesday without enough plate appearances to qualify for the International League leaders because an oblique muscle strain shelved him for a stretch of games earlier in the year. But with a few more plate appearances, his average would be more than 30 points higher than the next leading hitter. Twins officials have said there are rough edges to other parts of Tolbert's game that need to be smoothed out. With the Twins trying to stay in the playoff race, they could gamble and have Tolbert smooth out those rough edges at the major league level. LEN3 |

Rochester's Matt Tolbert is back from an oblique strain, adjusting to third base and once again leading the International League in batting average. Tolbert, Minnesota's 16th-round pick in the 2004 draft, is now hitting .378 this season for the Red Wings with a .442 on-base percentage, .573 slugging percentage and a 1.015 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.
Tolbert missed 15 games in May and the beginning of June after straining his oblique on a check swing but came back with the same pop. In his past 10 games (entering Friday), Tolbert is batting .436 with six doubles, one home run and six runs batted in. "I just continue doing my routine, taking a lot of swings," Tolbert said Friday. "I think I'm carrying the bat around a little more this year off the field. Just trying to get good pitches to hit." On Thursday Tolbert played his first game of the season at third base. He'll likely be there until Matt Moses recovers from the sore neck that has kept him out of the lineup since May 29. Tolbert said he played 29 games at third base last season for New Britain. He also can play the outfield. "We always looked at him as a utility guy," Rantz said. "But he's an everyday guy right now because he's playing so well. We didn't want to lose track of the fact that he can play anywhere in the infield." Kelsie |

Wings' Tolbert having a hot time at the plate
IL batting leader is averaging a lofty .377 Jim Mandelaro Rochester Democrat & Chronicle Matt Tolbert did the math this spring and mentally booked himself a flight to New Britain, Conn. "I really thought I would start the year at Double-A," the switch-hitting infielder said. "I expected it." Tolbert was thrilled to be wrong when he made the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings' roster for Opening Day. He began the season as a reserve, but when second baseman Alexi Casilla was promoted to the Minnesota Twins just one week later, Tolbert seized his opportunity. He's still seizing. In just his third full season, the Mississippi native is an early surprise as the International League's batting leader. He was a .275 hitter entering this season, but he's batting .377 now with three home runs and 26 RBI in 48 games. Even a two-week layoff because of a strained oblique abdominal muscle couldn't slow down this hitting machine. He has hit safely in 13 of his 14 games since returning, going 22-for-53 (.415). Included in that streak is a 5-for-5 game in Indianapolis. "That's the first time I've ever done that," he says. "Not even in Little League." Tolbert's hitting is so consistent, it's scary: .352 at home and .398 on the road, .388 against left-handed pitchers and .371 against righties, .455 in the day and .345 at night. He's even hitting .350 with runners in scoring position and two outs. "He's earned it all," manager Stan Cliburn said. "He had a good spring, and he really came out hot out of the gate. He's been producing for us consistently." Tolbert injured himself checking his swing on a 3-2 fastball in Richmond. "I felt it," he said. "It was tough, but it had to heal on its own. I tried to keep a bat in my hands and keep a feel for it." Tolbert hits to all fields and has above-average speed. He is a gritty, blue-collar player who does what it takes to succeed. "I know I'm not going to hit a lot of homers," the 6-foot, 177-pounder said. "I have to scrap for everything I get." Cliburn was batting Tolbert in the No. 9 hole before his injury, but he has hit No. 2 since his return. Tolbert enjoyed four solid seasons at Ole Miss and was selected in the 16th round of the 2004 draft by the Twins. A natural second baseman, he began preparing for a utility role last season and has seen action with the Wings at second, shortstop and third. Making the Triple-A roster was a major feat for Tolbert, considering that he was demoted from Double-A New Britain to Single-A Fort Myers just one month into the 2006 season. He was hitting .216 when the Twins sent him to Florida. Tolbert responded by hitting .303 over a six-week stretch, then hitting in nine consecutive games when he rejoined New Britain on June 22. He finished the year batting .258 for the Rock Cats. The Twins put him into the Arizona Fall League, and he hit .313 with 15 walks and six stolen bases in 24 games for Mesa. "I was really anxious to get this year going," Tolbert said. He didn't receive an invitation to big-league camp this spring, and the general thinking was that Casilla, a rising star, would start at second for Rochester and versatile Tommy Watkins would return at shortstop after a career year for the Red Wings. Gil Velazquez was expected to return as a utility player, with Tolbert back at Double-A. But a strong spring by Tolbert opened enough eyes that he was given a spot on the Wings' 24-man roster, albeit on the bench. He didn't stay there for long. "He's someone to watch," farm director Jim Rantz said. "He has a lot of tools, and he works hard. He makes things happen." Tolbert grew up in Woodville, Miss., a town of about 1,000 people 45 minutes north of Baton Rouge. "Stick City," he calls it. That's fitting, since Tolbert has been carrying a hot stick for the Red Wings all season. He grew up idolizing Paul Molitor and Pete Rose "guys who played hard." His baseball education took place in the family's back yard, where his dad, Moose, would drill Matt and older brother Benjamin in throwing and hitting. Moose was also Matt's coach in Little League. "He made me work at it," Tolbert says. Tolbert has flown under the radar during his brief career, but at least one national publication saw something in him. Baseball America magazine labeled him the "most overlooked" player in the Twins' farm system before this season. Many think Tolbert has come out of nowhere this season, and he's not one to disagree. "It's kind of true," he says. "I'm one of those guys who has to fight through, play hard and hope good things happen. I'm not a big-name guy." Not yet. The Tolbert file Age: 25. Height/weight: 6-0, 177 pounds. Bats: Switch-hitter. Acquired: Selected by Minnesota Twins in 16th round of 2004 draft. At Ole Miss: Hit .288 in four seasons at Mississippi. June 19, 2007 |

Big-league atmosphere entices Twins prospect
Class AAA infielder Matt Tolbert played first base in the Futures Game and got to the plate for one at-bat. By Joe Christensen, Star Tribune Last update: July 08, 2007 9:48 PM SAN FRANCISCO - When Twins infield prospect Matt Tolbert arrived at AT&T Park for Sunday's All-Star Futures Game, he had a problem: His jersey had a Detroit Tigers patch on one sleeve. "I didn't know if I'd been traded or what," Tolbert said. By gametime, however, Tolbert had his Twins patch, and somehow the mishap seemed fitting, as he spent the afternoon patching holes for the U.S. Team in a 7-2 loss to the World Team. Tolbert, who is batting .313 for Class AAA Rochester, was picked to represent the Twins after Matt Garza received his recent promotion to the big leagues. A versatile infielder in the Denny Hocking mold, Tolbert entered the game in the fourth inning at first base. He went 0-for-1 with a strikeout in the sixth against Franklin Morales, a lefthander from the Colorado Rockies organization. Tolbert, who has primarily played the middle infield, said he hadn't played first base before Sunday. The U.S. Team had two players for every position -- except first base. "We just wanted to get everyone in the game," said Dave Winfield, the U.S. Team's honorary manager. "These guys probably get one shot at this game." Tolbert, 25, was more than willing to help. His enthusiasm showed every time an inning ended, as he did his customary sprint on and off the field. A 16th-round draft choice out of the University of Mississippi in 2004, Tolbert wasn't considered a top prospect heading into the season. But he has made a name for himself, batting .340 in April, .370 in May and .318 in June, before slumping to .091 in July. He said media speculation that he could be nearing a big league promotion hasn't affected him. "You're not as close as you think," he said. "The guys they have up there are awesome players." Tolbert was still kicking himself for not making a tough play in the fourth inning, as a hard chopper from Robinzon Diaz bounced off his glove -- a play ruled a hit. "I missed a ground ball, and I struck out at the plate," Tolbert said. "We didn't win, and I didn't do anything. But it was an honor playing for the U.S. Team. It was my first experience in a big league ballpark, and it was amazing." Joe Christensen jchristensen@startribune.com |

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have added three players to their 40-man roster. Righthanded pitcher Bobby Korecky and infielders Matt Macri and Matt Tolbert were added, bringing the Twins total to 39 players on their 40-man roster.
Tolbert, 25, batted .293 (122-for-417) with 24 doubles, seven triples, six home runs and 53 rbi in 121 games for Triple-A Rochester last season. He was selected to play in the 2007 Triple-A All-Star Game as well as for the US Team in the 2007 MLB Futures Game. Tolbert was drafted by the Twins in the 16th round of the 2004 First Year Player Draft. twinsbaseball |

A third baseman is the biggest need for the Twins, who are expected to acquire help at that position through a trade or free agency. Macri and Tolbert, who are both 25, could be darkhorse candidates for the job, or at least for a utility infield spot.
"It'll be determined in February," Smith said. "They're on the roster because they've got ability. ... We'll let them come to spring training, and we'll let it play out and let the front office, the coaches and the manager decide." Dave Campbell |
